Why are human's selfish?
Is it our need to be in control, or it is our need for immortality which leads to our genetic mutation of being selfish .
This theory is explained beautifully by Richard Dawkins in his book "The Selfish Gene". Dawkins uses the term "selfish gene" as a way of expressing the gene - centred view of evolution as opposed to the views focussed on the organism and the group. From the gene- centred view, it follows that the more two individuals are genetically related, the more sense ( at the level of the genes) it makes for them to behave selflessly with each other. A lineage is expected to evolve to maximise its inclusive fitness - the number of copies of its genes passed on globally (rather than by a particular individual). As a result, population will tend towards an evolutionary stable strategy. The book also coins the term meme for a unit of human cultural evolution analogous to the gene, suggesting that such " selfish" replication may also model human culture, in a different sense.
In other words " Birds of same feather flock together"
As rightly said, people don't join a company they join the people working in that company. It's the leader who people join, if they feel they have the same view points. Even companies look for people with right attitude and ability to learn. We all want to make copies of what we believe in. A cheater will always find cheaters around , as this is what will make the cheater comfortable. Similarly a control freak will always try to find submissive people around to be in control. Positive attitude will always pull leaders, mavericks and adaptors, while negative will pull adaptors and disruptors. Such is our DNA.
We as a race are destructive, self centred and very selfish. Now the discussion point can be to blame it on our genes. But then if we look at each of us as individuals we do see the residue of our parents, grandparents and peers who we look up to. We adapt as per our environment and social pressures. But then don't we also say that there is good in everyone?
The term "Selfish DNA" is a term for sequences of DNA that have two distinct properties: The DNA sequence spreads forming additional copies of itself within the genome: and, it makes no specific contribution to its reproductive success of its host organism.
Rightly, as selfish beings bring nothing to this world other than there own agenda. They can be termed as parasites or people with no distinctive future than their own betterment. Without realising that there is nothing a human can do without taking care of their environment.
If not today, but in very near future, we humans will have to evolve from this. No amount of money can buy us fresh water, fresh air and a green and stable environment. We for our hunger have built animal farms, we are the BUTCHERS of treating every living organism as shit. We have created war, we have created man made religions to control humans, we have created everything toxic on this planet.
Maybe someday, our hunger for money will make us realise when there is no food left on this planet, paper is not what we can eat. Will we start eating humans? As our numbers are huge and as humans we don't even treat other humans with respect.
If we want a change, then we need to change drastically. We do need to change our outlook of capitalism and religion, we do need to understand that we are not top of the food chain, we are just like other living organisms.
We do need to understand that immortality is in our actions not by longevity of our life.
So what evolution can we look ahead?
